Public transport... and more

Every city has some great sightseeing routes by its public transport, also has Budapest. Above, I list my favourites.
A regular single ticket or a transport pass is valid almost everywhere.

Bus line nr 16.

It leaves from Szell Kalman ter traffic junction and goes through the Castle Hill to Deák ter. Deák Sq. is a meeting point for youngsters and also a good place for concerts and other cultural events. The party area name is "Gödör" (= the Hole) and a starting point of the shop window downtown tour (such is Vörösmarty ter and Váci utca).

The inbound is along the castle hill and through the Lánchíd (= Chain Bridge) tunnel. The outbound comes up to the hill at the roundabout.
The view you can enjoy from the bus is simply magnificent, especially in the evening...
The timetable is here.

Tram line nr 2.

This line comes along the Danube bank on Pest side. This tram line is the 7th on the list of the National Geographic - the best in Europe.
It is really worth to get on at Jászai Mari tér and ride until it terminates, parallel with the river. You will see the Parliament, the Danube Corso and the bridges on the ride underneath. All the way you can enjoy a great view of the Buda side.

Get off at MÜPA, the newest contemporary art centre. Take a walk there, climb the Zikkurat building at the front of it for a hidden knowledge. Or, visit Ludwig Museum, the best contemporary art collection in town.

You can also check there a very controversial National Theatre building. (It always reminds me a squatting chicken, but maybe you will like it.)
Tramline nr. 2 becomes a fairy tale lighting tram in December.

Timetable is here.

Tram line nr. 19 or nr. 41

from Batthyany tér stop is the inverse version of line nr2 at the other side.
Take it to Gellert Fürdő (=Bath) stop, then you can walk on Bartok Béla út, the upcoming coffee shop area of Buda. Visit my favourite, the Kelet, a very Berliner place in Budapest.
Timetable is here.

Boat nr. D12

If the weather is mild, take a tour of a public transport boat along the Danube itself. It is free on weekdays with your public transport pass. On weekends special ticket needed (appr. HUF 1200/pers).
The suggested itinerary is from Kopaszi gát (=dam) to Római part (=riverbank).
But you can have also a stopover at the edge of the Margitsziget (=Margaret Island). Timetable is here.

In your guidebook, you'll see the
Buda Funicular.

Of course, it worth to try, if there is no long line at the counter. Special tickets can be bought at the counter.
Infos are here.

But I would rather suggest the Zugliget Chairlift  (= Libegő).
At the top of the hill, you'll have a really big picture of the city.
Timetable is here.

Clogwheel Railway

(= Fogaskerekű)

At the end of the 19th century, the best airy part of Buda became extremely popular among wealthy businessmen and artists, so came up public demand for public transport access to the hill residential area. The rack-railway was designed by a Swiss engineer and still serves. You can bring your bike too, and on the way, you can change to the Children's Railway.

At the top of the hill, you can find the most beautiful art deco villas, especially around of Diána utca. More infos are here.

Gyermekvasút (= Children's Railway)

This line is really operated by kids volunteers aged 10-18.
The ride is a great fun for adult as well and there are special train at Santa and Halloween. Timetable, history, ticket prices and further infos are here.

Finally, of course, do not miss our

Földalatti

(=Millenium Subway / metro line  nr. 1, the yellow one).

Usually, those old machineries have a sexy French name... in Istanbul, in Tbilisi... but it has an unpronounceable Hungarian one.
I personally take it whenever I can.

Moreover, there are nostalgic vehicles in the city, mainly on Sundays.

Please always check the timetables behind the link - eg. due maintenance work sometimes there is no service.
More information about the public transport in general and specific are there.
